Cineuropa: Having recently talked to some experts in post-production, they underlined how crucial this process really is. How do you educate filmmakers on its importance?
Adrian Jasion: It’s a matter of proper planning. Post-production studios often emphasise the fact that the earlier they are involved in a project, the more efficiently the post-production will run. Post-production teams are also creative teams that are able to propose technological and artistic solutions for a film, thanks to which the producer and creators have a chance to optimise the planning of the entire production, especially the shooting period. In the case of more demanding scenes, the presence of a supervisor from the post-production studio is necessary on the set itself. The most important thing is the proper collaboration workflow in post-production, which shouldn’t be settled at the last minute.
At this year’s Post Production Forum, there will be a panel on comfortable post-production and optimal workflow for each project. There will also be a presentation by Andraz Sedmak and Luka Leskovsek, dealing with VFX supervising on set, while experts from the Di Factory company will talk about hybrid post-production – using negative and digital material combined. All of these topics will perfectly complete the answer to this important question.
You started by focusing on editing, now you focus on other aspects as well. What are some new needs, or tendencies, that you want to address and satisfy during the event?
We verified the concept and decided to extend our formula to other aspects related to post-production. We try to provide a high level of training in both technological and artistic topics. We see the need for industry education in the subject of HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology for example, so this year’s program will provide a solid dose of knowledge on this subject in the form of a workshop.
Post Production Forum is a place where talent meets technology. We will talk about the latest solutions for the implementation of Artificial Intelligence and the machine learning process in the post-production of an audiovisual image. Our recipients are often people who are just entering the professional path of post-production. In response to their needs, we are organising this year’s meeting with award-winning VFX supervisor and technical director from Hollywood, Allan Mckey. He will speak about creating your own brand and having a successful career in VFX. Editors will meet Dan Lebental, who will talk about the art of storytelling in big-budget Hollywood cinema. These are just some of this year’s topics, but they show the cross-section of needs and how we respond to them.
I noticed you opened up the event to viewers outside of the industry. Would you mind telling me something about the Cinema: Special Effect series?
We are committed to promoting the art of post-production among cinema lovers. People are interested in how a movie is made. We decided to organise a mini-program that will include screenings of documentary films and conversations with their editors, and a very interesting panel about the evolution of the special effects in Star Wars, for all the cinema lovers who were wondering how they were achieved.
I suppose that, in post-production, the idea of working remotely is not as revolutionary as it is to people working at other stages of the filmmaking process. Will you address this topic this year?
This year was a very big challenge for the entire industry, when it came to adapting to remote work. It would seem that the post-production industry was best prepared for it, but this type of work also requires proper preparation, both in terms of the structure of the work organisation as well as regarding infrastructure, technological facilities, and even data security. Certainly, this topic will be raised during discussions with our panelists.
You want to encourage people to collaborate with Poland on post-production. How will you present these options to international participants? And does Poland have to offer right now?
Yes, our mission is to promote the possibilities and achievements of Polish post-production studios, thus encouraging foreign producers and creators to undertake even more cooperation with Poland. Our market is very well prepared for this. The quality of services does not differ from the world level. This year, the publication Post in Poland – Guide to the Polish Post-Production will be published. We will present the profiles of over 20 companies operating in the Polish market, together with a description of their experience and capabilities, as well as contacts to relevant people. The reader will be able to learn about the principles of cash rebate operations, which includes post-production as an eligible cost. The catalogue will also include interviews with experts offering interesting perspectives on industry issues. Ultimately, the publication will be supplemented with further information, and the database of companies it contains will grow.
